New Withings Health Mate App.

The new Withings Healthmate app allows heart rate measuring on select iOS devices.

Owners of select iOS devices can now join and compete with their friends who own the Withings Pulse fitness trackers. The updated Health Mate app allows step tracking using the sensor in the smart phone. The Withings Health Mate app is the core of multiple Withings products including the Withings Pulse O2, wireless blood pressure monitor and the Smart Scale.  All the data funnels into the Health Mate and gives you a glance of your health indicators.

Another key feature of the updated Health Mate app is the inclusion of heart rate measuring capability. Where owners of the Withings Pulse unit will need to take their heart rate on the Withings Pulse unit itself, the updated Health Mate app allows users to measure their heart rate right from their iOS device.  As of press, the heart rate reading function works on a iPhone 4s without a glitch. A lower heart rate over time generally signals a stronger heart due to physiological adaptations from cardiovascular training.

This might be another avenue for you to track your physical activity and fitness over time without having to fork out a single dollar; if you own select iOS devices that is.

The Withings Health Mate app is available on both the App Store and Google Play.
