The Jawbone series of fitness trackers have always ranked high on the list of wearables I’ve reviewed. From the mobile app right down to the hardware, it was always stylish, intuitive, simple yet informative. Despite that, the influx of HR monitoring enabled fitness trackers on the market the last few months has left the dated Jawbone fitness trackers languishing. Jawbone has risen up to the challenge and announced the release of 2 new Jawbone fitness trackers; the Jawbone UP3 and Jawbone Move.
Jawbone UP3 (RRP $179.99)
Where UP24 was simplistic, the UP3 sees the use of anodized aluminum and a one size fit all clasp and buckle system. The main technology behind the Jawbone UP3 is the use of bioimpedance sensors.
Combined with other sensors, the Jawbone UP3 tracks resting heart rate and REM sleep (previously only available on the Basis line of fitness trackers). Activities like Zumba and tennis are automatically recognised and a smart coach will deliver customised advice and challenges.
List of features:
- Tri-axis accelerometers, bioimpedance sensors, skin and ambient temperature sensors
- Tracks heart rate, steps, calories burned, sleep quality (REM, deep, light)
- Water resistant up to 10m
- Vibration motor allows setting of silent alarm and idle alerts
- Wireless syncing via Bluetooth 4.0
- Automatic activity recognition and logging
- LED indicator light shows mode status. (Blue for sleep, orange for activity, white for notification)
- Smart coaching
- Up to 7 days battery life
- Magnetic USB charging
Jawbone Move (RRP $49.99)
The Jawbone Move is a coin sized tracker that utilises a coin battery. Needless to say, battery life is a good 6 months before change. At only $49.99, it competes directly with the just released Misfit Flash. The verdict is still out there which is better.
Users have the option of clipping the Jawbone Move to belts, shirts or placing the tracker unit in a wrist band (sold seperately) The LED lights on the face of the tracker reveals the progress towards your goal. One press to display step progress, twice for time and three times for sleep from previous night.
It’s a no frills tracker that does more than the free mobile UP app but still lets users experience the full Jawbone UP fitness tracker experience.
List of features:
- Tri-axis accelerometers
- Tracks steps, calories burned, sleep
- Splash resistant
- Wireless syncing via Bluetooth 4.0
- Smart coaching
- 12 White LEDs, 1 Orange LED, and 1 Blue LED indicate progress and status
- Up to 6 months battery life
The winning factor is not the hardware but how Jawbone continuously makes sense of the tracked data and present it back to the user. The UP system is going to be hard to beat.
