According to a post on Xperia blog, it seems Sony has accidentally leaked images of their newest activity tracker, the Sony SmartBand 2 SWR12, and quickly removed it from Google Play store. The Sony SmartBand 2 SWR12 seemingly sports an optical heart rate monitor sensor, an apparent upgrade over its predecessor the Sony SmartBand SWR10.
Screen captures of the app dashboard shows activity tracking in the form of step counting and active duration, along with smart wake up and some form of smartphone notifications. There doesn’t seem to be a display. What’s interesting is that there appears to be two forms of heart rate measurements; an even rate throughout the day and during pulse training.
The next killer feature is the availability of HRV (heart rate variability) readings; a result used to assess recovery rate after a hard bout of workout. To date, I’ve only seen this feature in Jaybird Reign and Wellograph smart watch. Sony is clearly upping its game by providing more than just heart rate measurements.
List of features (assumed) :
- Tracks steps, activity, sleep
- Vibration enabled
- Smart phone notification in the form of vibrations only
- Reads HR and HRV
Back in June last year, I was impressed by the potential of the Sony SmartBand SWR 10 but the lumbered follow up in terms of accessory straps customisation was a let down. It didn’t help that Xiaomi released their famed $15 Miband that tracks a lot for a tiny price. Hopefully the Sony SmartBand 2 SWR 12 fare better.
