About 2 months back we heard news of the successor to the original Sony Smartband in the form of Smartband 2. Just today, Sony officially announced the Smartband 2 on their website and posted a publicity video on Youtube.
The Sony Smartband 2 tracks steps, sleep and important moments through the Lifelogging app. The most distinct feature is the addition of a heart rate sensor that is powerful enough to read heart rate variability (HRV) and pulse.
Vibration motors and 3 RGB LEDs work in unison to notify the user when an alarm, message or call arrives. The Smartband 2 can also be used as a remote to control media playback or camera on compatible mobile devices.
List of features:
- Tracks steps, sleep heart rate and HRV
- Automatic sleep tracking
- Smart alarm
- Vibration motor
- Smart notifications
- IP68
- Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC enabled
- Media remote
- Out of range alert
- 2 days battery life, up to 5 days in stamina mode, and 10 hours with Heart activity mode
Like its predecessor, the Smartband 2 features a removable tracker unit and customisable wrist straps. While the original Smartband had some kind of collaboration in the form of fashion wristbands from Roxy, it took forever to be released. The new Sony Smartband 2 will be available in 4 colours; white or black during initial release with pink and blue wrist straps available at a later date.
Sony has managed to squeeze in additional features like out of range alert and some form of smart phone notifications, but I’m particularly excited about the HRV capabilities of this wrist worn activity tracker.
It seems the Sony Smartband 2 will be available next month at the price of 119 euros. I’d be sure to get my hands on a unit for review.
