Basis Peak: The Ultimate Fitness and Sleep Tracker

By Michael S • October 1, 2014 • News

The Basis Peak heralds the birth of a new era after Basis was bought over by Intel. Back in Jan when I reviewed the Basis Band I remarked that the activity tracker was way ahead of its time. To date, the stats tracked by the Basis band remains unmatched amongst the sea of wearables. Can good become great? Basis thinks so.

Ditching the touch nodes and plastic build, the Basis Peak now sports a sleek looking forged aluminum body (my friends all wanted one after seeing the promo video), is touchscreen enabled, water resistance to 5ATM and tracks heart rate 24/7. WOW. Did we mention it is also capable of displaying smartwatch notifications from iOS and Android phones as one of the planned future updates? Hold your drool.

Optical heart rate engine and a sleek look, the Basis Peak is poised to impress.

Readers might remember how the old Basis Band experienced dropped readings in HR during exercise. Basis claims improved accuracy and consistency with a reengineered optical heart rate engine and more powerful sensors on board.

As the flag bearer for Basis, after being bought over by Intel, consumers can be assured the things which made Basis Band good are kept and the flaws eradicated. BodyIQ technology, that tracks walking, running, cycling, and Advanced Sleep Analysis that includes REM tracking is carried over into Peak.

Basis Peak in Brushed silver and Matte black.

The Basis Peak is available in two options:

  • Matte black module with balck and red-accented straps.
  • Brushed silver module with white and gray accented straps.

Users can also customise with a band of their choice with the standard 23mm watch strap attachment. Another improvement over the Basis Band.

The new mobile app on Android and iOS.

List of features:

  • Intelligent activity and sleep tracking with BodyIQ
  • Gorilla Glass 3 touch screen
  • Water resistant to 5ATM
  • Smartwatch notification capability in mid Dec 2014
  • Vibration
  • Compatible with select iOS and Android devices
  • 24/7 heart rate monitoring, even during exercise
  • Measure perspiration, skin temperature
  • Magnetic charging cradle
  • Up to 4 days of battery life
  • Stream HR data via bluetooth to fitness apps on compatible mobile devices
