Fitness Trackers Hygiene

By Michael S • April 5, 2014 • News

How often do you clean your fitness trackers? I wear my Jawbone UP24 religiously and i usually give it a light rinse after a bout of heavy exercise.

Recently i went for an hour run in the hot afternoon and i came back all drenched and wet. After warming down I hit the showers, leaving the fitness tracker on the bench; i had forgotten about it that day. Luckily for me the kind attendant remembers me as the guy who’s wearing funny bands kept it for me. I wore the Jawbone UP24 almost immediately after getting it back. It was a short while later when i experienced a slight itch and redness around the skin. I examined the band and realised  dirt had accumulated in the grooves of the Jawbone UP24 wordings.

The grayish bits are actually dirt filled “words”.

The lengthy run in the humid weather caused quite a bit of perspiration and me leaving the fitness band on the bench without rinsing allowed the perspiration and dirt to dry out. I gave the band a quick rinse under the tap and rubbed it with my fingers hoping to clean it. No luck.

It took a toothpick and some light scrubbing with soap and a toothbrush to do the trick.

Unlike a watch which is often removed when you’re sleeping or working out, fitness trackers are worn almost 24/7. My Jawbone UP24 fit so well it’s always in contact with my skin. I’m guessing my lack of regularity in cleaning it might have contributed to the itch.

Now on top of rinsing my band daily, i examine it to ensure there’s no dirt buildup. Time to give your fitness tracker the “clean” attention it deserves.

*Not all fitness trackers are water resistant or water proof, please ensure you’re cleaning it correctly to prevent damage or spoilage.
